Case Studies

There is no better way to learn about new technologies than actually using them or learning from other people's experiences. Select from the case studies listed to see how teachers across the UK are putting their SMART and TurningPoint® products to best use. Each case study includes a set of Teachers Tips.

St. Ambrose Catholic Primary
Their solution: Use TurningPoint® to build multiple choice slide presentations for display on the school's SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards. The answers students select are instantly stored so teachers can check how well the children have absorbed class material and to track their results over time. That information can also be used to organise study groups efficiently or to monitor differences related to factors such as gender.

Responses can be made anonymously, to encourage participation, or via a “named” TurningPoint keypad. The keypads Year 5 students keep on their desks are permanently assigned to them, giving these children instant, visible feedback on their efforts in class.

Brampton Ellis Junior School
The challenge: Help to transform a former mining area with high unemployment into a community at ease with technology.

Their solution: In a region where male unemployment is stubbornly high, Brampton Ellis is eager to engage boys in learning. A project called Pit2Net paid for interactive whiteboards in every classroom and now, after just two years, the tactile and friendly controls of SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards are helping boys take their place at the front of the classroom. Initial training and support was funded by Rotherham Borough Council, but teachers are free to explore on their own how to put the technology to work for their pupils.

Big screen images from websites such as Famous People from the BBC and the National Portrait Gallery, plus animations from software such as Easiteach, are enticing students to the material.
